History of Baccarat

The exact origins of the baccarat card game are a matter of dispute. One source dates it back to Italy towards the end of the 15th century, and another to as early as 19th-century France. It is widely believed, however, that an Italian man named Felix Falguiere created the first baccarat game in the 1400s. He first called it «baccarat», which is the Italian derivative of the word «zero» – apparently because the face cards and tens were worth zero.

Originally, baccarat rules were slightly different from what we have today. The cards were dealt by four dealers, each player had an equal chance to be the banker and could wager against the house and each other. From its earliest appearance in Italy, the game later moved to neighbouring France where it became popular with the King and his noblemen. It was played as a three-person game at this time and remained so until the legalization of casino gambling in 1907.

A two-person baccarat variation known as «Chemin De Fer» became popular at this time, and was played in many gambling houses. Over time, the game migrated to South America and the Caribbean and was known as «Punto Banco», later earning the pseudonym «American Baccarat» in 1950s Las Vegas. Today, casino baccarat games feature only one dealer, and bets are placed against the house which serves as the banker.

Types of Baccarat Online Casino Games In Slots City Casino

You can play baccarat online in any classical variation or other provider-specific variations at many online casinos. Slots City Casino offers players several types of baccarat online casino games with varying themes. You'll find some like Baccarat Mini, Baccarat PRO, and No Commission Baccarat. These variations are typically alike but with minor changes in rules, functionalities, or sometimes, payouts. Let's have a look at the three most popular baccarat casino games:

Punto Banco

The closest to classic Baccarat, Punto Banco, needs no introduction in North America as it's the most commonly played type. In Punto Banco, players bet against the dealer, which is unlike what happens in Chemin De Fer. From the name itself, you can visualize the two opposing sides – Punto means «player» and Banco means «bank». The main objective of Punto Banco is to get a number closest to nine or a nine itself before the other side does or before going bust (over).

As you would see in other baccarat casino online versions, the card value for 10s, Kings, Queens, and Jacks, is Zero. Aces have one point while every other card has the same point as their face values. The total value of a hand is the combined sum of the first two cards drawn. If the value is a two-digit number, ten is subtracted from it. For instance, a hand with two values, 6 and 8 brings the total to 14. The actual total value of this hand is calculated as 14 – 10 = 4.

Punto Banco is played at large baccarat tables with seating for up to 12 or 14 players. There are six or eight decks of cards that get shuffled by the dealer before the start of each round. All card dealing in Punto Banco is handled by the dealer(s), unlike in Chemin de Fer where the players shuffle and deal the cards themselves.

Chemin De Fer

This non-banking version of baccarat was the one played in the Napoleonic era in France. You'll mostly find Chemin de Fer at online baccarat casinos in automated tables, as live casino baccarat is typically offered as Punto Banco or Mini. In this variation, players bet against each other, a stark contrast to the Punto Banco and Baccarat Banque.

In Chemin de Fer, a player holds the bank and sets a wager that covers that of the opponents. Another difference between this and Punto Banco is the number of players involved – a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12. The game is played over a kidney-shaped table with six decks of cards moving across the table counterclockwise.

In this real money baccarat version, the players each take turns to be the banker, leaving every other participant as a player. Each round begins with the banker placing a wager and then players can choose to go all-in against the banker or place a different bet that they»re willing to risk. If by the end of a round, the banker has the winning hand, all losing bets of players are passed to the bank.

Baccarat Banque

Baccarat Banque is an online casino baccarat version that is a direct counterpart to Chemin De Fer, with the big difference being that the house always holds the bank. This variation is played with three decks of cards instead of the traditional six or eight cards, and the table sits between 10 and 16 players.

The gameplay for Banque Baccarat real money games is quite similar to Chemin de Fer with just a few minor differences. Although each player also takes turns to be the banker, they don»t play against each other and the banker won't need to cover the bets of other players. Usually, the player with the highest stake is chosen as the banker and remains so until he/she can't place any more bets or if the shoe is played out.

How to Play Baccarat

Whether you're playing the classical baccarat variations or live dealer baccarat in Slots City Casino, how to win in baccarat is the same. The application of a baccarat strategy can get you closer to any of the three possible outcomes – Player win, Banker win, or Tie. Here»s how to win baccarat live casino or classic online baccarat:

  1. Place your bets: Bets should be placed on either the Player's hand or the Banker»s hand before any cards are dealt.

  2. Dealing cards: Two cards are dealt each to the player and the banker. One card is slid out and placed face-up in the player's box on the table. The next card is placed in the banker's box on the table, then another player and banker card are dealt.

  3. Announcing the value of dealt cards: If the total is more than 10, the second digit is the actual value of the hand. For example, a 7 and 9, which is a total of 16 make up a six-point hand.

  4. The «natural» win: If the point total for the first two cards that were dealt is 8 or 9 for either the player or the banker, this is referred to as a natural win and the game is over for that round. All bets that have already been placed are then cashed out.

Calculate the winning hand: Once all the cards have been dealt and there is no «natural» win, the winning hand will be that which has a total that is closest to 9. If there's a tie, however, neither hand wins or loses. Commissions are sometimes paid out of winnings when betting on the banker's hand
